KINGS, QUEENS, AND SUBJECTS
Ashford Academy.
Due to the nature of her father’s diplomatic duties for the Britannian embassy, the red-haired, blue-eyed Kallen Stadtfelt moved around quite often as a child, and had never attended any educational institution. Initially, her father had turned his nose up at the idea of Kallen attending the local high school (“She’s a Stadfeldt – she should have private tuition!) but Kallen’s mother had persuaded him to allow Kallen to socialise with people her own age. So there she was, clad in uniform with a piece of buttered toast in her mouth, regulation school bag slung over her shoulder, and standing outside the tall iron gates, looking in.

So there she was, clad in uniform with a piece of buttered toast in her mouth, regulation school bag slung over her shoulder, and standing outside the tall iron gates, looking in.
Calm down, Kallen. It’s just school.
After locating the administration block and receiving her timetable, Kallen had found herself settling down at a desk near the front of her classroom. There were two Japanese teens sitting adjacent to her (one serious-looking, dark and curly-haired teen and the other was tall and lanky with slicked back dark red-brown hair). They watched her every move. After a small silence the lanky one spoke up.
“Are you Japanese?”
Kallen was woken from her reverie. “I’m half.”
“If you’re half-Japanese, then why do you look Britannian?”
“Oh, my god, Tamaki. You can’t just ask why people they look Britannian. This is Tamaki,” the curly-haired one replied. “He’s almost too stupid to function.”
At this time, a Britannian boy walked by, and with a sneer on his face he asked the curly-haired one, “Nice wig, Ougi. What’s it made of?”
“Your mom’s chest hair, Britannian pig!” He glowered and stared the other student down until the other boy had gotten out of earshot. “I’m Ougi.”
Something as simple as a friendly smile from Ougi made Kallen completely feel welcome in this otherwise alien place.

“Jeez, what the hell is that C.C. wearing?”
Not knowing where her next class was, Tamaki and Ougi had offered to take Kallen there. But no one else was around. What kind of teacher would hold a class outside on the grass behind the gym? Apparently that part of the school had burned down in 1997 and the Ashford family, for reasons unknown, hadn’t bothered rebuilding it. Kallen was uneasy about skipping class (“Wouldn’t we get in trouble?”) but she was reassured by Ougi that they wouldn’t (“We’re your friends. We wouldn’t let you get in trouble,” Ougi had said offhandedly).
It felt odd to already be called a friend by someone she had just met, but Kallen took it in stride. Friendships had to start from somewhere, didn’t they?
Kallen now followed Tamaki’s gaze. He had been staring off in the direction of a green-haired girl, clad in pure white shorts and a matching sleeveless top that exposed her stomach in obvious disregard of uniform regulation. But judging from the nonchalant way she stared off into space, she didn’t seem to mind.
“Of course the Unholy Trinity are all in the same gym class.”
“Who are the Unholy Trinity?” Kallen asked Tamaki.
“They’re teen royalty.”
“That one there,” Ougi pointed out to the tall, brown-haired Japanese boy (he was running around the field showing off how high he could kick), “that’s Kururugi Suzaku. Tamaki sat next to him last year.”
“He asked me how to spell ‘Eleven’,” Tamaki commented, disbelief written all over his face
Kallen couldn’t help but stifle a laugh.
“That little one,” Ougi continued, and this time pointing out the shortest of the three—the green-haired girl, now eating a pizza (was that even allowed?)—“that’s C.C.”
A small frown appeared on Tamaki’s face. “She’s totally a witch because she talks to dead people.”
“C.C. knows everybody’s business, because she knows everything about everyone.”
“That’s why her hair’s so green,” Tamaki mused. “It’s full of secrets.”
Ougi jerked his head towards the last of the trio; a black-haired youth surrounded by fawning girls. “And fabulousness takes a human form in Lelouch vi Britannia.” There was a hint of bitterness in Ougi’s voice. “Don’t be fooled because he may seem like your typical controlling, pretty, two-faced bastard but in reality, he’s a lot more than that.” At this point, Ougi had crossed his arms and had a far-off look in his eyes. A frown tugged at the corners of his lips and he continued his commentary of Lelouch. “He’s a prince - the Eleventh Prince of Britannia. The other two are just his little workers.
“Lelouch Lamperouge... How do I begin to explain Lelouch Lamperouge?”
Like a mantra, Ougi began reciting a list of what made Lelouch Lamperouge who he was.
Royalty? Here? Kallen had heard that it was a prestigious school but she had no idea that actual members of the royal family actually attended Ashford Academy. Even though it was her first time to actually attend school, Kallen was already seeing the different groups or ‘cliques’ within the student body. Each group had their own rules to play by, but even she could see that the Unholy Trinity was on a whole other level.
Her high school life was going to be interesting—very interesting.
